Prayer Request from Laos

I have some great friends who are missionaries in Northern Thailand. They are very close to what is known as the “Golden Triangle.”  This is where the borders of Burma (Myanmar), Laos and Thailand meet.

This morning I received an email from them with a prayer request for a believer in Laos who has been captured by the Police.  (Laos is not open to Jesus).

(names and locations have been changed for safety)

Please pray our brother XXXX.  He is the leader of the village XXX in Laos.  He was taken into custody today by the police. They came in a vehicle and took him away. No one knows where he has been taken to and his family is obviously distraught. This is not a good sign at all as these things have happened numerous times in Laos and the people either were given long jail sentences or have never returned. Please, Please, Please stop and pray. Please keep praying for XXXX that he will remain firm and stand in the face of the accuser. That he will be bold, yet wise.  That the flock in this village will not run scattered as is often the case.

Be with him Lord.  Protect our brother.  Keep him from the evil one.  Let him recall your words from Mt. 28 “that you are with us always even till the end of the age.” Help him to recall that all authority belongs to you Jesus.  Give him strength and boldness to make you look grand as he may be tortured and beaten. May he sing hymns of Your Faithfulness like Paul and Silas did in Philippi. Give him peace.  In your name and blood we pray. Amen.

BOOK ALERT - November

I am an uber book nerd.  I love books.  I used to hate them.  My high school years were not very impressive at all when it came to reading. Whatever book I was suppose to read, I didn’t.  SparkNotes and Cliffnotes and the girl sitting next to me, always seemed to help when the examine showed up.  In no way am I proud of that.  I hate it.  But God has been gracious.

When I entered Bible College, I knew I couldn’t cheat there (nor did I want to).  My love for reading began to grow, but my speed and comprehension was not where it ought to have been.  So, I prayed for God to grow those capabilities.  He has been good.

Now I am freakishly into books.  It is better than figurines, star wars, pogs, beanie babies and any other weird/creepy affinity, I guess.

HERE IS THE BOOK I’M EXCITED ABOUT….

The Unwavering Resolve of Jonathan Edwards by Steve Lawson

Edwards

I got to read the first book in this series on John Calvin, entitled: The Expository Genius of John Calvin.

It was an outstanding read.  Lawson provides a very succinct biography on the person but also provides some insights into their ministry.

My hope is that this book, like the first, will be very captivating, convicting and encouraging as we look at the faithfulness and life of a servant of Jesus.

I love John Piper’s advice, “Pick a few dead heroes. They won’t let you down as easy as one who is alive still. And then imitate their faith (Hebrews 13:7).

You excited about this one!!!??!!  I like Edwards, but wow, he is hard to read.  My dead heroes might be: John Owen, Lloyd Jones and Spurgeon.  Not sure yet.

What is preaching? Logic on fire!!!…Theology on fire. And a theology which does not take fire, I maintain, is a defective theology; or at least the man’s understanding of it is defective. Preaching is theology coming through a man who is on fire…What is the chief end of preaching? It is to give men and women a sense of God and His presence.
Preaching and Preachers by D. Martyn LLoyd-Jones, page 97

Silly Shirts - Part 6 - Food Theme

I wonder what your thoughts are from this weeks barrage of posts on silly christian t-shirts.   Some have been garbage, while others have been kind of funny, and yet there are others that have been very offensive.

However, the question we need to ask is, and need an answer to is:  What is the point of these shirts?  Anyone?

To encourage, exhort or equip believers?  Hmmmm, probably not.  I know I am not compelled to live a holy life that is pleasing to my King by seeing a shirt that says “Jesus died for myspace in Heaven.”  It makes me shake my head in disbelief that an unbeliever, who knows that I am a Christian would associate me with that as well.

Maybe the point is to evangelize the lost.  I am not so sure this is happening.  Especially with shirts that rub in peoples faces that God won’t be in hell and implying they are going there.  Not so sure how effective that has been.

I asked 3 unbelievers what they thought about the shirts and they didn’t like them at all. They thought they were dumb, silly and it brought no desire to love Jesus.  Zero.  Good grief, Hindus aren’t making cheesy shirts. Buddhists aren’t making cheesy shirts.  Mormons aren’t making cheesy shirts. Jehovah’s Witnesses aren’t making cheesy shirts.  We have to ask why!?   I would submit it’s because, they do have some reverence and fear of their gods.  While they are all false gods, they fear and respect them.   My fear is that this is a problem in Christianity.  We lack the fear of God that we so desperately need. Which leads to many grave errors.  Oh that God would help us!

One of the baristas at Starbucks went on to talk about a youth group that comes in to the store every Sunday night and how a lot of them wear the cheesy shirts.  He asked if anyone at The Station (the college ministry I serve in), wears them.  I told him, “No.”  He replied, “Really? Why not?”  I told him back, “Because they are lame….and I try to make fun of them often.”  He replied, “Cool.”

We have to ask the question: What is their purpose? And if it is to ‘reach the lost.’ I would argue this is a horrible way to do it.

HOWEVER!!!!!  God has used a donkey, a teenager, a burning bush, a rejected race, a group of 12 mediocre followers, un-welcomed prophets, and most of all a humble, marginalized, Galilean peasant, who is God, our Savior - Jesus.  God has used odd things.   So…who knows?  God will judge in the end.  I know I am not a fan.  Maybe God has used one of these shirts before. Maybe He’ll correct me when I see Him in Glory.

With that…Here are the food themed shirts.  He is the bread of life right? Haha.

Mountain Dew -

Crush (orange drink…it is not that good).

Hershey Bar

Suppose to be Coke.  Horribly done, I think.

Starbucks

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (kind of makes me want one).

OH man…I had to put the YooHoo one up with the ‘model’

Subway.  What could they do of Quizno’s?  Hmmmm.  Ideas?

Milk…this is one gets the award for most uncreative.

Burger King (this one is second to got jesus? They didn’t even capitalize Jesus, kind of weird).

Gatoraid

Oscar Meyer (this one was new for me)

Sprite (who drinks Sprite? Seriously? Other than when you are sick?)

Campbell’s Soup

Pepsi?  (Where is Dr. Pepper!?)

Life Savors

More than I thought there would be!

Silly Shirts - Part 5

I promised that today would be some crazy ones.  I was so tempted to give another themed day of shirts.  Which I will probably do tomorrow.  (snacks will be the theme tomorrow).

Tonight is going to be the highly offensive shirts. Not in cussing and sexuality, but these are…well…it seems a jerk would only where these.  And maybe a few by shirts made by people who don’t love Jesus. I put some plain weird ones as well.

Today’s is kind of a conglomeration of the plain weird.

I don’t see how a follower of Jesus could wear some of these.

They have subjected babies to the insanity again…

Let’s offend as many as possible (not over the Gospel mind you) with the, “WE HAVE TO SAY CHRISTMAS” mantra. Here is two.

Dumb shirt…

And every Christian in Texas has to have this one, yikes!

Not exactly a Christian shirt…but this one is a shocker.  An unbeliever made this one.  Oh, How hateful our souls are.

I wonder about this one…kind of funny.

This shirt was made buy a group of young believers, who want to “live offensively for God.”  Mission accomplished?  Yuck.

Clever….

Wow..

Maybe….Im sure he had to at some point.

Kind of funny…

Apparently He saves money too….

Oh my…

He will rule physically on the earth…

To wrap it up….

Yikes…not sure here.

Oh man…there are just too many weird and bizarre shirts.

Silly Shirts - Part 4 - Internet Special

Facebook is way cooler than MySpace.  I don’t like MySpace.  Yuck.

So in honor of Facebook and MySpace…here are the cheesy shirts that are meant to lure the lost in.  (so they think).

faithbook

(they should have put “do you confirm”…would have been more accurate.”

And…The myspace knock off…

Myspace

And since we cannot be involved in anything secular, it seems these days, I just had to add this shirt.  It made me think of “GodTube” (the christian youtube site).  Here is the Jesus Youtube Shirt.   BONUS!

YouTube

Be ready for tomorrow.  You will be shocked.

Thoughts?

Silly Shirts - Part 3

There are so many terrible ‘christian’ shirts out there.  As some of you may have seen the collection that Zach left for us in yesterdays comments…some are plain scary.  Some are very laughable.  And then there are the ones that belittle and demean the worth our of Savior.

If you listen to or read John Piper at all you will be familiar with this idea.  One of the problems of our faith can be when we only value Jesus as our way to heaven. It is wrong when we think about Jesus’ death for us and all we think is, “Awesome!  Heaven!  No hell!!!”  While this is true, what do we deem to be the reward here?  Heaven?  Only heaven? Not going to hell? Maybe it is eternal life? But then what do we define eternal life as?  I hope we define it as what Jesus defines it as in John 17:3.  That we get to know God!!!!   We value Heaven because Jesus is there.  If He isn’t there, would we still want it?

If you read, God is the Gospel by Piper, you will get a greater grasp on this.  Do we really savor Christ  as the object of our faith OR do we savor the gifts that he has given us?  Do we view Jesus as a means to an end or as Jesus being the end Himself? Do we know that glorious gift of our salvation is being with Jesus? Jesus is the reward.  Or as Piper would say, “Do we view Him as a ticket?”

What’s the problem with a ticket?

When you go to the movies, do you prize the ticket? Do you tell your friends about the ticket?  Do you enjoy and love the ticket? Do you give your all for the ticket? Do you thank the ticket? And, it is works based as well. I had to buy the ticket!!! Salvation is the free gift of God to all who believe! Hopefully you see the problem. No one cares about the ticket!!!! (unless you are OCD and collect Star Wars stuff.) What do we do with the ticket?  We throw it away and think, “Ok..I am in.  Now what?”   Now what!?  Now…you are to savor and love Jesus and worship Him.

News:  That’s what the angels are doing in Heaven, and its the picture we see in Revelation. One of everyone around the throne singing to the Lamb, “Worthy are You!!!!”  If you do not enjoy that now, what will you do in Heaven?

Is Jesus the ticket?  Yes and no.  The problem is reductionism.  We can’t reduce it to that.  Another problem is with making analogies.  Let’s try to stay as close to Scripture as we can.  Let’s get our minds around the I AM statements first.  Jesus is the Door.  That will do just fine.

Should we preach turn or burn?  Yes. John the Baptist did (Matt. 3). But we have to show them the beauty of what they ought to turn to.  The radiance of the glory of God that is in the face of Jesus Christ!!!!  It is not God glorifying to not want to get punished.  A toddler knows that. Toddler’s respond in fear, not so much in love. “There is no fear in love, because perfect love casts out fear. The one who fears is not perfected in love, because fear involves punishment. We love because He first loved us.” - 1 John 4:18-19.

I love our Father’s gifts.  But, we are to love Him more.

All of that to say….sigh.  Here is shirt #3.  This one makes me sad a little bit.

What do you think?
